MY CLASSROOM

April 17, 2010

This unit – Teaching Students The Tricks of Advertising – consists of 10 individual lessons and is meant to be taught over the course of 10 hours, with the duration time of approximately 1 hour per lesson. The lessons are grouped together according to themes. I teach my students Media Literacy one a week for one hour. Please adjust this unit according to how your media lessons are scheduled. These activities are in accordance with the MELS competencies.

The intent of this blog is to post my media literacy education unit plan, as I would like to share my ideas with my students, fellow teachers, and parents. However, please be mindful that it is extremely important to read the whole unit in advance, to make sure that the content is appropriate, in order to be fully prepared for adapting these lessons to your own classroom.

Although this unit is generally acceptable for grade 6, be sure that the images or links I have provided, as well as the projects, assignments, questions, evaluation methods, etc… are appropriate for the students in your class and that you have the necessary resources available beforehand.

Welcome to my Media Literacy Education blog.

I am an education specialist in media and technology for classrooms and I have developed an online unit plan for teaching students the tricks of advertising in order to teach them how to be responsible citizens and consumers.

There are many pros and cons that are associated with media-related issues. However, beyond the explicit words and images often found on television and in movies, beyond the inappropriate music videos and role models, and beyond the (mis)use of the Internet; there is another form of media which can be found in all of the above outlets and more… ADVERTISEMENTS

Advertising is a major form communication used to reach out and grab consumers by their wallets. Therefore, I believe that one of the first steps of teaching students how to be media literate is to start with advertising. It is a primary goal for teacher to raise responsible global citizens of the world, therefore, teaching how to be responsible viewers and consumers is a good place start.

Please continue to read on as I have put together a media unit plan of ten valuable lesson plans that any teacher can use to provide their students with an efficient and effective media literacy education. It is important to remember, however, that each class is different. You must adapt the day plans to what works best for you as the teacher, and for your students as well. For example, an activity that might be best used in groups for one class, might be better if done individually in another class.

Oh! The school bell just rang… time to start teaching!!! But… one important tip to remember: this is probably the subject the majority of your students will enjoy learning the most as it hits home for most of them. Students really relate to everything about the media and it is nice change for them from learning math skills, so it is important to keep the lessons fun, as this will engage their learning more and they are more likely to absorb the entire lesson!

🙂 Until next time…
